buncol is a place to build worlds and write stories, alone or together. These guidelines apply everywhere on the site: projects, writing, world builder content, uploads, forums, usernames and profiles. They are part of the Terms of Service.

The short version: treat people well, keep fiction fictional, and do not post anything illegal.

Fiction and dark themes

Worldbuilding often goes to dark places. Wars, crime, villains, horror, cruelty and tragedy are all fine in your writing and worlds, within reason, as long as it is clearly fiction and does not target real people. What is not fine, even as fiction:

  • any sexual content involving minors;
  • content that attacks, threatens or sexualises real, identifiable people;
  • content that encourages real-world violence, hatred or self-harm.

If a project contains mature themes, please say so in its introduction, especially when its forum can be read by everyone.

What is not allowed

Each heading below matches a reason on the report form.

Spam

Advertising, repeated or off-topic posts made to promote something, link farming, mass invites, and accounts created to do any of these.

Harassment

Insulting, bullying, intimidating or stalking people; following someone across projects after they asked you to stop; piling on; dodging a ban from a project or the site with another account. Sharing someone's private information without their permission (doxxing) - such as a home address, phone number, workplace, or the real name behind a pseudonym - also falls under this.

Hate

Attacking or demeaning people because of their race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, age or similar characteristics, including slurs and hateful symbols used for that purpose. Fictional societies can be prejudiced; your posts about real people cannot.

Sexual content

Any sexual content involving minors is forbidden without exception, whether real, drawn or written, and will be reported to the authorities. Sharing intimate images of someone without their consent is forbidden. Pornographic images are not allowed anywhere on the site, and explicit sexual writing does not belong in forums that are open to all users or to the public.

Violence and threats

Threatening anyone, encouraging violence against real people or groups, glorifying real attacks or their perpetrators, encouraging self-harm, and sharing real graphic images or footage of violence, injury or death.

Illegal content

Anything that is illegal, such as pirated or stolen material, content that infringes copyright, selling illegal goods or services, and malware.

Impersonation

Pretending to be another person, another project, or a buncol moderator or administrator, including with a misleading username.

Other

Anything else that breaks these guidelines or the Terms of Service, such as trying to get into projects you have no access to, or abusing the report form.

Images

The images you upload follow the same rules as everything else: nothing these guidelines forbid in writing or posts is allowed in an image either. Only upload images you may share: ones you made yourself, or whose maker allows you to share them here, for example under a free licence. Images in a project's media library can be reported, and the project's moderators and the site moderators can hide them.

Project rules

Project owners and admins run their own projects. They decide who may join, what each role may do and who can read and post in the forum, and they can pin, lock and hide threads and posts, delete whole threads, and remove or ban members. A project may have stricter rules than these guidelines, but never looser ones. If you disagree with a decision inside a project, talk to its owner or admins first; report it to the site only if the decision itself breaks these guidelines.

How to report

Forum posts and threads, the images in a project's media library, and people's names in member lists, have a Report link. Choose the reason that fits best (spam, harassment, hate, sexual content, violence, illegal content, impersonation or other) and add any details that help us understand the problem.

  • A short snapshot of the content is saved with your report, so it still counts if the content is edited afterwards.
  • The person you report is not told who reported them.
  • You can have one open report per item, and file up to 20 reports a day.
  • Your account standing page shows the reports you filed and whether they have been handled.
  • Filing false or abusive reports is itself a violation.

If you cannot use the report form, or someone is in immediate danger, e-mail info@llmpeeters.com - and in an emergency, contact your local emergency services first.

What happens next

A site moderator reviews the report, looking at the content, its context and the author's history. Depending on how serious it is, the moderator can:

  • dismiss the report when nothing is wrong;
  • hide the content: it is replaced by a placeholder for everyone, and project moderators cannot undo it;
  • warn the author;
  • suspend the author for 1, 7 or 30 days: they can still log in and read, but cannot post or change anything until the suspension ends;
  • ban the author: they can no longer post or change anything on the site.

The most serious violations, such as sexual content involving minors or credible threats, lead to an immediate ban and, where required, a report to the authorities. You can see every action taken on your account or content, with the reason, on your account standing page, and a banner at the top of the site points there while you are suspended or banned.

Appeals

Everyone makes mistakes, moderators included. You can appeal any moderation action once, with the Appeal button on your account standing page; this works even while you are suspended or banned. A moderator reviews it and either reverses the action - for example lifting the suspension or restoring the content - or tells you why it stands. If you cannot reach your account standing page, e-mail info@llmpeeters.com.
